UAE: In a move towards sustainable energy collaboration, the Sultanate of Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals, in tandem with Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom), has forged a strategic partnership with key entities including the Port of Amsterdam, Zenith Energy Terminals, and GasLog.

This consortium recently formalized its commitment through the signing of a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) during COP28 in Dubai. Notable witnesses to this historic accord were His Excellency the Minister Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi and the Climate Envoy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Prince Jaime de Bourbon de Parme.

This collaboration focuses on creating a liquid hydrogen route to establish a green corridor between Oman and the Netherlands, marking a milestone in the global hydrogen industry. The Joint Study Agreement (JSA) involves a thorough assessment of an open-access hydrogen facility in Oman, with GasLog contributing expertise in developing specialized vessels for liquid hydrogen transportation.

Moreover, in this plan, Zenith Energy’s terminal will serve as the hub for importing, re-gasifying, and distributing hydrogen to local users in the Amsterdam port and European hinterland industries. Additionally, establishing an open-access liquefaction facility not only unlocks significant potential for Oman but also creates opportunities to explore cost-effective hydrogen export corridors and collaborate with global markets.

Aligned with Vision 2040, Oman’s commitment to diversify the economy and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 is evident in this venture. Leveraging its strategic location and abundant wind and solar resources, Oman is set to become a key hydrogen supplier to European and Asian markets.

Hydrom, serving as the driving force behind Oman’s hydrogen sector development, plays a pivotal role in overseeing project execution and managing the allocation of government lands to hydrogen developers. Furthermore, this initiative establishes a precedent for global efforts to decarbonize industries and address climate change challenges, illuminating the path to a greener, more sustainable future amid the imperative shift to cleaner energy sources.
