Oman: In response to the warm invitation from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the President of the Swiss Confederation visited Oman. Following President Alain Berset’s official visit, Oman and Switzerland, in a joint communique, emphasized the crucial need to enhance their ties.
This diplomatic exchange emphasized a commitment to collaboration across various sectors, including economy, trade, investment, tourism, environment, logistics, renewable energy, education, and research.
During the visit, both leaders discussed regional and international developments, emphasizing their support for dialogue, negotiation, and mediation to address political, security, and human rights issues. They highlighted a shared commitment to principles of international law and the multilateral system as essential for establishing justice, freedom, and the human right to a dignified life.
A key collaboration between Oman and Switzerland is the Global Health and Peace Initiative, championed by both nations within the World Health Organization. This initiative promotes the idea of health and peace for all through joint global cooperation. The practical implementation of their vision included signing MoUs, covering areas such as healthcare development with Roche, cooperation in tourism, and sustainable energy and technologies.
In January 2024, Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals will initiate collaboration with a consortium led by the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology. This joint effort highlights a commitment to sustainable energy solutions and technological advancements benefiting both nations.
Furthermore, diplomatic ties were reinforced through agreements, including one between Oman’s Diplomatic Academy and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. Additionally, a signed agreement on the employment authorization of accompanying persons of official employees further facilitates bilateral engagements.
Symbolizing the historical ties and friendship, a joint commemorative postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations was issued during the visit which stands as a testament to the enduring connection between Oman and Switzerland. President Berset thanked His Majesty the Sultan, the Omani government, and its people for the warm reception. Reciprocally, an invitation was extended to His Majesty for a visit to Switzerland, emphasizing the mutual desire to strengthen friendship and cooperation between Oman and Switzerland.
